The naturally low yield of these historic Zinfandel vines contribute to the price of Lodi red wines and Paso Robles red wines, like the Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel, Hayne Vineyard Zinfandel, Dogtown Vineyard Zinfandel, Rattlesnake Ridge Zinfandel, Dragon Vineyard Zinfandel, Presenti Vineyard Zinfandel and Dusi Vineyard Zinfandel. These wines are known for their rich red and black fruit aromas, along with a hint of spice. Turley also make wines from younger Zinfandel vines, like the Juvenile Zinfandel.

Turley also produces single-varietal and blended wines from Petite Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines like the Presenti Vineyard Petite Syrah, Library Vineyard Petite Syrah, Hayne Vineyard Petite Syrah, Turley Estate Petite Syrah and Rattlesnake Ridge Petite Sirah are known for their mineral aromas and nuances of spices and pepper. Turley Cabernet wines tend to be dense and full-bodied Napa Valley red wines with powerful aromas. Their specific personalities vary from vintage to vintage.

Today, Turley Wine Cellars produces 47 different wines from over 50 different vineyards, around half of which are estate-owned and the other half in long-term lease agreements between Larry Turley and like-minded local winegrowers. The focus at Turley has always been the recovery of historic Californian vineyard parcels to produce singular wines from Zinfandel and Petite Syrah. Some of these vineyards are actually over 100 years old, including the Hayne and Ueberroth vineyards, which were planted in 1902 and 1885, respectively.

In order to achieve higher quality while also respecting the land, all of the vineyards with which Turley works are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers, or at some stage in the process of conversion to organic. To produce the wines of Turley Wine Cellars, Tegan Passalacqua relies exclusively on naturally-occurring indigenous yeast.

The Turley Wine Cellars portfolio is made up of 47 different wines, each with its own personality. And while the specific characteristics of each wine depend on grape variety and terroir of origin, the Turley signature style seems to be one that embraces the full-bodied, robust texture and fruit-forward profile of Zinfandel and Petite Syrah grown in the hot climate of California. The fruit is left on the vine long enough to fully ripen, which can often lead to very high levels of alcohol in these wines.

Similarly, the Turley Old Vines Zinfandel blends Zinfandel harvested from old vines (between 41 and 129 years old) from many different sites in California, including Napa, Sonoma, Lodi, Mendocino, Amador, Paso Robles and Contra Costa. In this case, fruit is taken from vineyard sites that are either too small to produce a single-vineyard cuvée or that are relatively new to the Turley portfolio. By blending fruit from several different sites, this wine offers a beautiful representation of Californian old-vine Zinfandel.

And for those looking to taste some of the best Petite Syrah in California, the Hayne Vineyard Petite Syrah, from vines planted in 1953, offers a wonderful tasting experience. The Turley Wine Cellars Estate Petite Syrah is another classic, with a dark, brooding nose of luscious black fruit jam, blue florals and exotic spices. Certified organic, this single-variety Petite Syrah combines firm, chewy tannins and a generous acidity with a long, lingering finish. A wine to be decanted before serving and enjoyed with boldly flavored dish, like a slow-cooked beef pot roast or seasoned rack of lamb.

We endeavour to display accurate and current vintages on all our wines listed on the website; however, from time to time stocks of the vintage listed do become exhausted. If this is the case with your order we will always contact you to recommend another vintage of the same wine, if it is still available. If the vintage of a wine is important to you then please leave a note at checkout advising us of this.

Turley Wine Cellars is a second-generation family winery that has the reputation for producing the finest Zinfandels in California from small parcels of extremely old, dry-farmed vines. We have been extremely fortunate to have worked with them since the mid-1990s.

The Turley Wine Cellars Juvenile Zinfandel is composed of a variety of young vines (aged from 6-25 years) that have been replanted in several of the estates old vine sites. The younger vines are tagged and picked separately to make a distinct wine. Hailing from 27 vineyards across the beautiful Golden State, Turley Juvenile is more of a clear bellwether for the 2019 vintage than any other wine Turley make. Turley Wine Cellars is a popular California wine producer with wineries in both Templeton (Southern Cal-Paso Robles wine region) and St. Helena (Northern Cal-Napa Valley wine region). Turley wines are often recognized as "making some of the best, if not the best Zinfandel in California for decades."[1] Becoming a recipient of the winery's private wine club can take up to two years.[2]

In 1993, Turley Wine Cellars was founded by Larry Turley, brother of the well-known consulting winemaker Helen Turley. Turley had entered the wine business in 1981 as co-founder of the multi-varietal Frog's Leap Winery, but soon realized that his interest lay in wines made from the Zinfandel grape. Starting out with just one location in St. Helena, Turley Wine Cellars soon expanded to Templeton with the purchase of the historic Pesenti winery, where Zinfandel had been planted since 1923.

By 2011, Turley Wine Cellars is annually producing approximately 16,000 cases of award-winning Zinfandel and Petite Sirah wines using multiple "small" vineyards located in Napa and Sonoma counties, and other Paso Robles locations.[6]

Old Vines comes from around 18 vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador and Paso Robles. They are either too small to be given individual designation or very new to the Turley stable. The vines average 80 years old and the resulting wine offers more brooding depth and intensity than Juvenile. On winemaking Turley comments - "We never crush, we press whole berries. We never use anything but wild yeast, we never filter or fine, we rack occasionally, and we have stuck with our long fermentations, taking 30, 40 days, sometimes four to five months, to finish in barrel." 041b061a72
